The life of a luthier

I was born in the summer of ’69 and grew up in Pretoria in South Africa, where I played violin from the age of eight, studying under Annemarie Swanepoel. After school, I obtained a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.  As an adult I joined the Rand Symphony Orchestra for whom I played for ten years, ending up as the principal of the second violin section.
My lutherie career started in 2000, initially as a self-taught craftsman, but subsequently I attended numerous courses, including by Hans Nebel, Raymond Schryer and Joe Robson.
Since then I have made dozens of instruments, including violins, violas, cellos and also a viola d’amore.
My instruments are owned by several well-known professional players in South Africa, including Zanta Hofmeyr, Serge Cuca and Maretha Uys the deputy concertmaster of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
